SolarMask — how it began
How it all began

With a thesis and a healthy dose of curiosity.

A few years ago, one of us wrote a dissertation on photobiomodulation — the science behind LED light therapy.

The literature took us by surprise: dozens of clinical studies, clear results on acne, wrinkles and pigmentation. No wellness claims, but measurable effects at a cellular level.

But when we wanted to try it ourselves, we hit a brick wall. The domestic market was divided into two camps:

  • Toys costing €40 — dim LEDs, no specifications, no CE marking. Nothing more than a warm light bulb.
  • Premium models costing €400–600 — they’re good, but prohibitively expensive.

There was no middle ground: the right wavelengths, sufficient intensity, a fair price.

That was the moment we decided: we’ll just make it ourselves.

What we have built

One mask. Thoughtful choices.

312 LEDs in 78 quattro beads. Five wavelengths: red (630 nm), blue (450 nm), yellow (580 nm), violet and near-infrared (850 nm). CE-certified, wireless, with integrated controls. One-off payment of €129.

Along the way, we took apart dozens of existing masks, measured their wavelengths, and made two specific design choices that are not found in any of our competitors’ products.

Controls integrated into the mask
01

Controls on the mask

Most masks have a controller attached to the device by a wire. It’s awkward, fragile and tends to fall behind the seat. We’ve integrated the controls into the mask itself. Wireless, one button, done.

Extra headband for weight distribution
02

An extra strap over the head

Almost all masks are secured at the back with just a single strap — so all the weight rests on your nose. Our solution: a second strap across the top of your head. This distributes the weight, so you’ll hardly feel it.

The middle way that nobody built

Toys: premium — or simply good.

What we stand for

Three principles we never compromise on.

01

Science over marketing

Every claim on this site is backed up by a study. We link to PubMed wherever possible. Our science page is deliberately in-depth — for those who want to check the facts. Have a read.

02

No false promises

LED light therapy works, but not in a week. Want real results? You’ll need 8–12 weeks of consistent use, 3–4 times a week. Anyone who promises otherwise doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

03

Honest about what we are not

We are not dermatologists. We are not a skin clinic. We sell a good product and explain honestly what it does and does not do. Anyone who needs advice on a specific skin condition should see a doctor.

Why the name SolarMask?

No UV. But light.

That’s a fair question — our masks do not use UV light. SolarMask uses safe LED wavelengths, which have been proven in studies to improve the skin without causing DNA damage.

So why this name? ‘Solar’ for the light. ‘Mask’ because you wear it. We believe that light — the right light, controlled and in the right amount — makes the skin glow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Who is behind SolarMask?
SolarMask is a Dutch DTC brand, founded by a small team with a background in research and product development. We deliberately keep our operations small-scale and online-only so that the margins that would otherwise go to physical retailers or agencies are passed on to you in the form of a fairer price.
Does the mask have a CE mark?
Yes. The SolarMask LED mask is CE-marked and complies with European requirements for LED light therapy devices for home use. The manufacturer has a technical dossier containing test results for wavelengths, light intensity and electrical safety (EMC, LVD), in accordance with the applicable EU directives.
Which countries do you deliver to?
We ship from the Netherlands to the whole of the EU, including Belgium, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Standard delivery times are 1–2 working days within the Netherlands and Belgium, and 3–5 working days within the EU. Orders placed before 5 pm on working days are dispatched the same day.
What if I don't like the mask?
You can return the mask within 30 days without giving a reason — we’ll cover the cost of the return label. The device itself comes with a 2-year warranty. Any questions about your order? Email contact@solarmask.eu or use the WhatsApp button at the bottom right.
Why is SolarMask so much cheaper than CurrentBody or Omnilux?
Not because we use fewer LEDs or weaker wavelengths — in fact, SolarMask has 312 LEDs and five wavelengths, whereas many premium masks have just three or four. But because we have no physical retail outlets, no wholesale intermediaries and no agency marketing budget. We pass those savings on to you.
